Speech Therapy Services

Why are our speech therapy services different?

Everyone has the right to have their voice heard. Our speech therapy services are here to help people communicate in ways that work best for them.

We understand that all people communicate in ways that work best for them. Not everyone speaks with words. Some people use body movements, facial expressions, signs, pictures, or communication devices. These are all ways people may make choices and express their thoughts.  We call this multimodal communication.

We support people with complex communication needs. We work closely with the person and their chosen supporters to build a communication approach. We build an approach that best matches how the person thinks about and expresses their ideas.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to communication. What matters is that people can say what they want, when they want, and in the way that works best for them. We respect each person's communication choices.

Our Services SP

Who do our speech therapists work with?

Our speech therapists work with children, teens and adults who have communication support needs. This might include people who don't speak verbally, those who use few words, have trouble being understood, or who need help with social or functional communication. We also support people who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) methods, or those who want to try AAC.

What do our speech therapists do?

Our speech therapists work with the person and their supporters to help find the best way for each person to communicate. This might be by supported verbal speech, introducing visual supports or devices, or building confidence in interactions. We also help families and supporters to understand how the person communicates, including any new methods. We teach supporters how they can communicate more effectively with the person.

Our speech therapists will:

  • Talk with the person and their supporters to learn what is important to them.

  • Explore how the person communicates and what might help them feel heard.

  • Support the person to build confidence in communicating their needs, wants, and ideas.

  • Help introduce and teach new communication methods, like visuals or AAC.

  • Work with families and support teams so everyone can understand and use the person's way of communicating.

  • Assess mealtime safety, including how the person swallows, and provide practical advice and supports.

  • Develop mealtime management plans that match the person's needs and help keep them safe and included at mealtimes.

Our speech therapists can provide assessments and reports to support NDIS funding and therapy goals, including communication and mealtime management assessments and plans.
